Pictured above is Templin's Carriage and Waggon Works, 1869.
Two school chums, both mechanically inclined, had a dream of one day opening a garage of their own.
The boys grew up and while serving overseas in WWII, Warden Howes and Terry Reeves Sr., were informed that the Templin Garage in Fergus, was for sale. The late George Templin's sister, Annie Templin, agreed to hold the sale of the garage until their return from the war. Historically, Templin's Carriage and Waggon Works was established in 1869 and located on St. Andrew Street East. The dream became a reality in 1945. Warden and Terry Sr. became partners and operated a Hudson dealer for several years, continuing under the name of Templin's Garage. As business grew, they saw the need to form a new company and Howes & Reeves was born. By this time Hudson and Nash amalgamated to become American Motors Corporation. Terry Sr. continued to operate the business as Howes & Reeves Limited after Warden Howes passed away in 1971.
By 1973, the dealership began selling Jeep.
Howes & Reeves Limited joined with Merlin Kropf and Hank Eisen to develop property at the west end of Fergus and the 'St. Andrew West Mall' was built. In 1980 the AMC Jeep dealership moved to it's current location in the mall located on St. Andrew Street West. Chrysler bought out AMC Jeep in 1988, and at that time Terry Reeves Jr. took over the business. The dealership is unique in that it shares mall space with several other business operations.
Howes and Reeves Limited continues today, owned and operated as a family business, with Terry Reeves Jr. as dealer principal. His father, Terry Sr., age 87, is still actively involved every day, living out the dream of so long ago.
